It has been widely reported that Tottenham are preparing to make a bid for 31-year-old Barcelona striker David Villa - but will he be the player to take Spurs to the next level?
Tottenham suffered last season because a lack of firepower, due to Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor contributing s16 goals between them, which ultimately saw the north London side fail to reach their target of qualifying for the Champions League.
There is no doubt that Villa is a proven goalscorer: he is Spain's all-time leading scorer with 56 goals in 91 games.
This shows his ability to take chances, and with players such as Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Lewis Holtby supplying the opportunities, Villa could be the perfect fit for Tottenham.
He has invaluable experience of playing at the highest level - for example, he has played in major international and club finals, such as the 2011 Champions League final, where he scored against Manchester United.
Villa can be a leader in the Tottenham squad by offering advice to the squad from his time with Barcelona, where he has won a host of trophies. This could help Spurs to achieve their ambitions of winning silverware, something they have not done since 2008.
However, there is also a risk to signing Villa due to his poor injury record since he broke his tibia in 2011. This injury caused him to miss a lot of playing time and has also meant he has started a lot of games on the bench in the 2012/13 season.
This has caused him to lose a yard of pace and could be a potential risk if Spurs chose to sign him by the fact he may be injury-prone or by the fact he may fail adapt to the Premier League. At the age of 31 time is not on his side to have a slow start if he were to join Tottenham.
Tottenham could also use the money to invest in younger talents, with players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Christian Benteke, who Spurs have also been linked with, arguably better buys. This is due to the fact they may be better value for money as they may last longer than Villa at the top level.
Taking these points into consideration, Villa could a quality signing and another Daniel Levy bargain special such as Rafael van deer Vaart in 2010, who made a big impact in his two seasons at the club.
With the quality of chances also created by Spurs’ midfield, Villa could prove to be one of the buys of the summer.
