Marquinhos’ agent has rubbished rumours that his client is about to sign for Barcelona, after reports emerged of the Spanish giants' interest.

The 19-year-old has had an impressive season at the heart of Roma’s defence and it was thought that Tito Vilanova was close to agreeing a deal that would bring the Brazilian to the Nou Camp.

"The interest of Barcelona? He is a Roma player and he remains at Rome," said Marquinhos’ agent Roberto Calenda.

Calenda confirmed to Radio Sportiva that the combative centre-back is still very committed to his current club.

He said: "It is inevitable that there are interests for a player so young and already regular in an important team.

"He still has a four-year contract with Roma and then I would not do fantasy flights."

Barcelona are known to be in the hunt for defenders as their current back-line is sparse in numbers and they have been forced to experiment with putting the likes of Alex Song in at centre-back to cover for absentees.

They also tried to promote Marc Bartra to the first-team towards the end of last season, but it is thought that they still want to add more players to cover this position during the summer transfer window.

Marquinhos made 26 appearances for Roma last season after his signing from Corinthians and it is understood that Rudi Garcia's side are keen to keep hold of their young asset.
