Manchester United are preparing an improved bid for Leighton Baines close to Everton's asking price of £16m, after having seen a bid of £12m rejected yesterday.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils' new boss David Moyes is keen to reunite with Everton full-back Baines and is poised to lure the 28-year-old with an improved bid.

The bid casts doubt over Patrice Evra's future at the club, who has been a regular starter for the past few years.

The 32-year-old has been linked with a move back to his home country France, with big spenders Paris Saint-Germain and his former club AS Monaco reportedly chasing for the player's signature.

However, Baines recently expressed his desire to play under new Everton boss Roberto Martinez.

The England international said: "We've chatted on the phone. It was just about speaking about the start of the season and looking forward to working with each other. Anyone you speak to only says great things about him."

However, Baines could benefit from his move to Manchester United, since he is battling for the England left-back position with Chelsea defender Ashley Cole ahead of next year's World Cup.

Martinez is desperate to hold on Baines, but an improved bid of around £16m could tempt the Spanish manager.
