Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is hoping that Manchester United struggle next season due to the loss of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford - but believes they are still title contenders.
The historic Scot stood down as manager of Manchester United at the end of last season, ending his 26-year association with the club. He was replaced by former Everton manager David Moyes, who will take charge of his first season when the new season begins towards the end of August.
Liverpool's captain does have a tremendous amount of respect for Ferguson's successor, David Moyes, but hopes that the Reds can make the most of the Manchester United's period of transition as they adapt to life without Fergie.
"They have replaced a world-class manager with another, who has done a fantastic job at Everton," Gerrard told reporters. "So I think David will continue to do a good job there. It's new for Manchester United. From a biased point of view, let's hope they have a wobble!"
But despite the managerial change, the England captain expects Manchester United to be the team to beat once again next season, but thinks that the title race will tighten up rather than the 11-point victory that United raced to last season.
"I think they have too many good players to fall out of the title race," Gerrard added. "They have world-class players and I expect them to fight for the league again. There's no getting away from it, the competition in the Premier League is going to get stronger and stronger."
