Sunderland are planning to bring Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone to the Stadium of Light, according to the Sunderland Echo.
Paolo Di Canio is a big fan of Huddlestone and is willing to part with a sizeable fee - around the £5m mark - to bring him to the club, as he looks to build his squad ahead of the new season.
Huddlestone, too, has hinted that a move away from Spurs could be imminent as he looks for regular first-team football. He said: “At times you think you might need to move.
“I am 26 now and missed a year to 18 months through injury.
“You just want to play every game and if that opportunity is not at Tottenham, then I will have to look elsewhere.”
Sunderland may have to battle with former manager Steve Bruce for Huddlestone, though, as Hull City are also rumoured to be interested in the 26-year-old as they look to strengthen their squad after promotion.
The Black Cats are known to be on the look out for a central midfielder, with Lee Cattermole looking likely to leave the club - and Di Canio feels that Huddlestone is the ideal replacement, as he looks to impose a more patient, passing style onto his Sunderland team.
