With Carlos Tevez sealing the deal with Juventus on Wednesday for a reported £12 million transfer fee, Manchester City are now in need of a replacement for the Argentine international who scored 73 goals in 148 appearances for City.
Robert Lewandowski has already been subjected to interest from a number of clubs this transfer window, but has seemingly always had his heart set on a move to Bayern Munich.
However, Borussia Dortmund's officials have stated that there is absolutely no chance of Lewankdowski joining Bayern Munich. They refuse to sell their two star players to their main rivals in the same window, with Mario Gotze having already left for the Allianz Arena, despite the fact Lewandowski only has a year left to run on his contract.
This has opened the door for a move to the Premier League, and Man City, for two reasons.
Firstly, Dortmund will be able to sell their striker to a club abroad, as opposed to their main rivals. It will therefore have little impact on their domestic campaigns should they sign a suitable replacement.
Secondly, it means that Dortmund will receive a decent transfer fee for Lewandowski, as opposed to letting him leave on a free the following year. As a club who pride themselves on sustainable, they can't afford to allow someone worth so much to leave for nothing. They need the transfer fee in order to reinvest.
This provides Manchester City with the prefect opportunity to buy the Polish striker.
City are in the market for a goal scorer as they have just two first team strikers remaining in Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko. The latter may even seek a move elsewhere due to a lack of first team action, especially if new aquisitions arrive.
Lewandowski proves a better option than Cavani for a number of reasons. At £25 million he is less than half the price of Cavani, as well as being younger and having more Champions League experience. The Dortmund forward seems to be just as good as the Uruguay international too; this is why many clubs are refusing to meet Cavani's buy-out clause.
