Nick Compton has been handed another chance to impress the English selectors ahead of the Ashes series.

With the other opening spot seeming to have already been given to Joe Root, Compton has a chance at getting the replacement spot if anyone gets injured or under-performs.

Andy Flower suggested that he play against Australia for Worcestershire and Somerset have given permission for Compton to play for Worcestershire.

With Compton having fallen down the England pecking order he scored a half-century for Somerset against Australia in a bid to get his place back.

The form of the other members of the England team will have a big part to play in Compton returning to international cricket.

As James Taylor has also been in decent form the selectors have a difficult choice of who to pick if the other batsmen don’t perform or pick up an injury.

With back-to-back Ashes coming up, Compton couldn’t have wished for a worse time to get into bad form, especially with the return of Kevin Pietersen. Players needed to cement their places in the side and all of the other batsmen have done.

Joe Root’s form has been incredibly pleasing for the selectors and they undoubtedly have huge confidence in him as they didn’t select Compton for the four-day match coming up against Essex.

As Root is naturally an opener it will help him more than Compton who was originally a middle-order batsman for Somerset. But, when Root has faced the new ball at times in his international career he has struggled. Although, the selectors still seem to have confidence in him opening the batting but a few poor innings’ from anybody could see Compton revive his international career.
