Under two weeks ago Southampton finalised a deal to bring Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren to St Mary’s for just £8.5million.

Everything suggests that the soon to be 23-year-old will prove to be a magnificent capture for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Lovren spent two years at Lyon in which he played 73 times. Not only this, he has been a regular member of the Croatian international set-up, making a total of 45 appearances for the youth teams.

Just four years ago, Lovren was rewarded for his fine form by then manager Slaven Bilic with a call up to the senior side, for who he has already played 17 times and scored two goals.

The last three years have shown how The Saints are heading in the right direction. Their ability to achieve back-to-back promotions as well as an impressive 14th place finish in their return to the Premier League shows how far they have come in recent times.

Just last season, Uruguayan forward Gaston Ramirez snubbed many big name teams to join Southampton. This capture made a statement to the rest of England that they weren’t content with just being a mid-table Premier League side, but instead wanted to keep improving each year.

Going forward Southampton are fantastic. On his day, fan favourite Ricky Lambert’s ability to score goals is as good as anyone else’s in the league. On top of this, players such as Jason Puncheon, Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez have all shown that they have the ability to work together to compete with the top teams.

The signing of Dejan Lovren has shown that Mauricio Pocchetino has recognised that improving defensively should be his priority this summer. The Croatian will undoubtedly slot straight into the back four, and is likely to become the main man at the back for The Saints next year.

Lovren could quite easily become one of the bargains of the summer, and if Pochettino is able to keep hold of his big name players during the current transfer window, Saints fans can be very excited about the future of the club.
