Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made a late bid last night for Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy - but was told to double that offer to stand any chance of signing him.

Mourinho, who left Spanish side Real Madrid this summer in order to rejoin Chelsea, made a formal £5million bid for the City shot-stopper, but the Norfolk-based club told the Special One to double his offer or face missing out on signing him.

Ruddy, who missed half of the campaign last season due to an injury, signed for Norwich three years ago from Premier League side Everton for a fee estimated around £400,000 and they are now holding out for a whopping £10million in order to sell the 26-year-old.

It has been quite a couple of seasons for Ruddy as not only has he established himself as one of the better goalkeepers in the Premier League, he has also won his first international cap for England and is now considered in the top-three current English shot-stoppers.

Mourinho's Chelsea currently only have one senior goalkeeper in the stature of Petr Cech and they are eager to bring in another experienced Premier League keeper to compete with the Czech shot-stopper.

Not only are they short on goalkeepers, Chelsea are also short on home-grown players and that is one of the reasons Mourinho has turned his attentions to Ruddy as Premier League rules state a club must have at least eight home-grown players in their 25-man squad.
