When David Moyes was confirmed as the new manager of Manchester United, it is was always likely that he would attempt to sign at least one of his former players from Everton.
On Thursday was it reported that Moyes had made a £12m bid for Leighton Baines, who is the player Manchester United must sign this summer.
Current United left-back Patrice Evra started last season with a knack for goals, going on to score five times in the season, which is a considerable number for a defender. But what this number hides is his failure to live up to his defensive duties.
Evra played more like a second left-winger for United, hardly ever falling back when his team lost the ball, and United gave away many goals through attacks from the right-wing because Evra couldn’t hold off the opposition.
For a player who is a regular on the team-sheet as a defender, that is an unacceptable flaw.
Alexander Buttner, a player bought to give competition to Evra, fizzled out after a dream debut where he scored one goal, assisted another and was awarded the man-of-the-match award. He could not get accustomed to the physicality of the Premier League and found himself on the bench more often than not.
Fabio, another left-back in Manchester United’s squad, returns after an unsuccessful loan stint at QPR, where he failed to even cement a first-team position.
Meanwhile, Baines has impressed everyone at Everton with not only his tremendous free-kicks, but also his physical strength, with which he easily stopped wingers in their tracks. He was also recently named as the most creative player in the Premier league.
If Moyes can bring Baines along with him to Manchester United it will clog up a gaping hole in United’s defence which was seen way too often last season, and will surely delight all Manchester United fans.
