Kevin Pietersen believes that Joe Root has all the ingredients to be a top England batsman.
Root has earned many plaudits during his fledgling international career so far and has recently been promoted to the top of the order.
Fellow England star, Pietersen, who is just returning to the international scene, believes the praise is fully merited, too.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: I knew he was going to be good when he walked out to bat [against India] in Nagpur in his first Test match and I was batting. Just [looking at] his face walking towards me for 20 metres I thought, ‘this kid’s going to be a flipping superstar’.
“It was just the confidence he walked out to bat with on his debut Test match in India, two spinners bowling, we’d just lost a wicket or a couple of wickets and he walked out with a smile on his face, and went ‘alright lad, you OK, you’re playing well there’.
“I’ve played 90 odd Test matches and I don’t walk out like that. But it’s brilliant for English cricket, absolutely brilliant.”
Despite this unreserved praise, Pietersen does admit to not knowing about the 22-year-old before he was called up to the England team.
“I never knew of him, I’d never heard of him, because when you’re on the [international] scene and young players come along you just don’t,” he said.
Root is thought be one of England's key players in the upcoming Ashes series against Australia and is expected to be able to cope with the pressure of a game of such magnitude despite his tender age, such is the confidence he has shown in all of his previous appearances.
He has played in six test matches for England, averaging 42.40 runs an innings.
