Liverpool announced the signing of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland for a reported fee of £9m on Tuesday, while the gossip columns have been packed with rumours linking Pepe Reina with a move away from Anfield in recent months.

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has declared he won’t sign a contract extension at FC Barcelona and would like to experience fresh challenges with another club. However, Valdes’s performances for Barcelona have deteriorated in recent seasons.

Barcelona are, subsequently, in the market looking for a direct replacement. They have been linked with many of the top keepers including David de Gea at Manchester United and Liverpool's Reina.

Recent reports suggest they had a bid rejected by Galatasaray for their Uruguayan keeper, Fernando Muslera. Fans in Spain won’t mind seeing the back of Valdes and would like to see Reina donning the Barcelona colours.

But Liverpool have maintained their stance that Reina is not for sale - and want the Spaniard to stay and compete with Mignolet for a first-team place.

Mignolet had an excellent last season at Sunderland and is excited about the prospect of playing for a top club like Liverpool.

Reina, on the other hand, has had several up and downs in his Liverpool career, where he has come up with brilliant performances and committedsome infamous blunders.

Last season can’t be counted as his best, but he has ultimately been able to retain the number one spot for his club over the years. Now he is in a completely different scenario altogether. Mignolet will give him tough competition every week.

Rather than being shunned by Liverpool, it would be best both for the player and the club to part ways, meaning Brendan Rodgers should sanction a move back to Spain.

Reina is still a Spanish international and would want to play every week rather than be seen keeping the bench warm.
