Ferdinand tips British driver for home glory at Silverstone
Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand backing Lewis Hamilton to win British Grand Prix
Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand is backing Lewis Hamilton to win the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday.
The United centre-back is tipping the Mercedes driver to win his first race of the year at his home Grand Prix as he looks to chase down the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso.
Vettel leads the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship with 132 points from three race wins this year, with Alonso in second on 96 points and two outright victories.
But Ferdinand believes home advantage could be crucial this weekend, and with Hamilton qualifying on pole position, the British driver has every chance of delivering on Ferdinand’s prediction.
Speaking to his official Facebook page, Ferdinand said: "Backing my boy Lewis Hamilton to win tomorrow's British Grand Prix! #RiosWeekendPredictions #F1"
And Hamilton set a stunning pace during qualifying on Saturday afternoon, finishing 0.452 seconds clear of the rest of the field. His Mercedes teammate, Nico Rosberg, will start from second on the grid, with the two Red Bulls tucked in behind on the second row.
Vettel took third and Mark Webber will start from fourth.
The pole position is Hamilton’s first since the Chinese Grand Prix back in April, and was the result of what Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn called a “very special lap”.
A few more of those on Sunday, and Ferdinand might just have backed the winner.
