Arsenal are reportedly preparing to make a shock bid for Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, as Jose Mourinho is prepared to let him leave.

According to the Sunday People, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is keen on partnering Torres with another new signing, Gonzalo Higuain of Real Madrid.

Arsenal are expected to finalise a deal with the Santiago Bernabeu club for the Argentina international soon and the report claims the Emirates Stadium club will turn their attentions to the £50million record signing.

The reason given for the possible transfer is that new manager Mourinho wants to give the Chelsea squad a serious overhaul.

Only a handful of names in the current team are in the former Real Madrid manager’s long-term plans – Torres is reportedly not one of these.

Arsenal are expected to go on an unprecedented spending spree this summer, as the club’s financial situation steadily improves thanks to new commercial deals.

The report claims Gunners officials are desperate to add some star names to the squad to halt the trend from the last few seasons of their best players leaving the club.
