Leeds United have made a bid in the region of £1million for 23-year-old Crewe midfielder Luke Murphy.

However, the Yorkshire club will face stiff competition from Blackburn and Wolves, both of whom have also tabled £1million bids.

At 23, Murphy has age on his side and would certainly be one of the younger members of a fairly old Leeds squad.

He has made 186 appearances after coming through the famed youth set-up at Crewe which has produced the likes of Danny Murphy, Dean Ashton and current Manchester united starlet Nick Powell.

Murphy has managed 21 goals in his time at the Alexandra Stadium, with his most important being the goal that sealed victory in the Football League Trophy against Southend last season - the club's only 'major' trophy to date.

Leeds have been crying out for a creative midfielder since the departure of Robert Snodgrass to Norwich City and Brian McDermott will be keen to find a partner for midfield enforcer Rodolph Austin.

This will also be a move that will be wildly celebrated by large sections of the Leeds support, who have not seen their club bid over a million pounds for a player since 2006.

If the deal does go through, it would be a statement of intent from the relatively new owners, GFH Capital and would surely help boost Leeds' ailing season ticket sales.

McDermott told talkSPORT that he had agreed a deal for one player to join next week, however, he refused to comment on whether it was Noel Hunt, who is widely expected to join up with his former manager after his Reading contract expired.
