Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has joined the growing number of athletes voicing their support for Andy Murray at Wimbledon this summer.
The Scot is looking to go one better than last year at the All England Tennis club, having lost to Roger Federer in last year’s final on centre court.
With he Swiss superstar and Rafael Nadal both crashing out of this year’s tournament early, the path appears to be clear for another run to the final, and a possible showdown against world number one Novak Djokovic.
It’s certainly enough to get Ferdinand excited, and the former England international centre back is certainly behind the man from Dunblane.
He wrote on his official Facebook page: “Backing Andy Murray for Wimbledon glory!! Need to see him slap someone around the court this week!”
Support from Ferdinand comes just hours after GB athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill voiced her support for a fellow Olympic gold medalist.
Murray is next in action at SW19 later today (Monday), facing No.20 seed Mikael Youzhny in the fourth round. He’s beaten the Russian twice in their two previous meetings.
