Manchester United must strengthen midfield before defence

Everton rejected a bid from Manchester United for left-back Leighton Baines last week.

The England international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford ever since David Moyes was confirmed as Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement. But is the left-back position where United need strengthening most?

While Baines would no doubt be a useful addition to the already very strong squad, he shouldn't be United's priority.

It's clear to see that the central midfield area is where United are weakest in terms of squad depth. Michael Carrick was sensational last season but adding a player to compliment his talents would see United hit an even higher level.

In modern football some of the best teams like to use an anchoring midfielder to sit in front of the back four, sometimes two players are given this role, like Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martinez at Bayern Munich.

Adding someone of this mould would bring a stronger defensive shape while allowing other players to concentrate on attacking. Victor Wanyama of Celtic and Lars Bender of Bayern Leverkusen have been linked with United before and could potentially perform well in this role.

Spain and Barcelona's tricky midfielder Thiago Alcantara has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United this summer and has all the attributes to exceed in an attacking central midfield role.

He can also play in the No. 10 slot which is something United fans have been asking for.

If Moyes can strengthen his midfield first, then bringing in Baines would a sensible next step. But improving the midfield should surely be a must, this summer.

Should Baines be United's priority? Who else would you like to see at United this summer? Comment below.
