Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu has warned Henrikh Mkhitaryan off joining either Tottenham or Liverpool, saying it would represent a step sideways rather than upwards.

The Armenian international enjoyed a fine season in Ukraine last time round, hitting 25 goals in 29 league starts.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for the 24-year-old, while more recently Tottenham are said to be keeping an eye on developments.

However Lucescu believes that the talented midfielder should snub a move to either Liverpool or Tottenham, because neither club can offer him anything Shakhtar cannot.

"It is his decision, his desire, but there is still time for him to change his mind, because I think he is making a big mistake," Lucescu is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror.

"I can understand the urge to leave if he has a chance to go to a club that surpasses Shakhtar, like Barcelona or Real Madrid, but not many clubs are beyond our level - not clubs like Liverpool or Tottenham.

"We are a strong club with 50,000 passionate supporters every week, and every year we are fighting for the league, the cups and the Champions League.

"This place is good for him, and he is making a mistake if he thinks there are many teams above this level."

Tottenham are expected to announce their first signing of the summer shorty after Corinthians midfielder Paulinho confirmed last night that he is on his way to White Hart Lane.

Liverpool have already been active having snapped up the likes of Simon Mingolet, Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto.
