Former Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas has expressed his desire to return to the sport after having taken a year out of the game.

Thomas, now 39, was a member of the New York Islanders last season following his suspension from Bruins for failing to report to training camp.

But the player never managed to get in the team and the Islanders traded for Thomas to have the final year of his contract bought out for $5m, allowing them to meet the league's mandates $44m minimum salary cap.

With the NHL's free agency period opening on Friday, Thomas' agent Bill Zito has confirmed he will be looking in to teams that are interested in acquiring the former Stanley Cup winners services for the next campaign.

"We talked this morning and he asked me to see if there's any options, " Zito told the Boston Herald. "So I'll be exploring his options to see what could be out there."

Thomas' intention to resume playing comes at a time when the Islanders are continuing to shuffle goalies, leading to speculation that the veteran could be heading there for a second stint.
