Denver Nuggets hire Brian Shaw as head coach
Brian Shaw hired as the coach of the Denver Nuggets, securing his first NBA head-coaching job after nearly a decade as an assistant
After reigning ‘Coach of the Year’ George Karl was fired for reasons unknown to him, Denver Nuggets gave Brian Shaw the chance he’s been waiting for - to become a head coach.
Karl, a former player, became the 7th coach to rack up 1,000 wins in his coaching career. This, along with being voted ‘Coach of the Year’, left a lot to be questioned when he was ‘let go’ with a year to run on his contract at the Nuggets.
Karl himself stated: "I think I should tell you, I think it's very stupid." And in many of the fan's eyes, they would agree with his statement. When the news broke, it left fans and players alike shell-shocked. Evan Fournier, a French SG for the Nuggets, left a questionably spelt tweet of “Waw”, which I feel best sums up the whole situation.
Nevertheless, the wait finally ended for Shaw as he was offered the job as head coach. He who was the assistant to Frank Vogel at the Indiana Pacers and appears to be a fantastic match for the Denver Nuggets.
Shaw will work with the team and look to build on the existing abilities of the players.
In an interview with ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelburne, Shaw said: “I look at the positive things that they did, the things they did well under George Karl, and try to continue to build on those."
Shaw will be gifted with a fantastic offensive team - with Andre Iguodala planning to vacate Denver, Shaw will still be left with Ty Lawson, forwards Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari (hoping to recover from injury as soon as possible) and the power-houses JaVale McGee and the ‘manimal’, Kenneth Faried.
Shaw is regarded as a player’s coach and I feel that his experiences with the Pacers will only improve the Nuggets, as he looks to impose his own playing style on the team.
Vogel knows how good of a coach Shaw is, adding: “Denver just got one of the best head coaches this league will see for years to come."
Denver Nuggets made a big statement firing Larl after such a great season, but introducing Shaw into the coaching role instead, in my opinion, can only benefit the team, giving Shaw the break he’s been seeking for so long.
