Andy Pettitte breaks New York Yankees strikeout record

Published 1 Comments

Andy Pettitte broke a 46-year-old record to become the New York Yankees pitcher with the most career strikeouts.

Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford had held the record since his retirement in 1967, but the Yankees win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night saw history made.

Pettitte struck out Clete Thomas in the second inning to tie Ford’s record, before sending Justin Morneau on his way in the fifth to move into the Yankees’ history books.

Morneau was the 1,958th strikeout of Pettitte’s career and he was in a proud but humble mood after the game.

Not only did the 41-year-old left-hander break the franchise record, he also helped the Yankees halt a five-game losing streak as they came through 10-4 winners at Target Field.

"I feel very fortunate to be around for as long as I have,” he is quoted as saying by ESPN.

“To be able to be mentioned with Whitey's name is obviously always an honour."

Pettitte first broke in to the big leagues in 1995 and spent all but three of his seasons with the Yankees, taking a short spell with the Houston Astros nine years ago.
