When Jose Iglesias received his second call-up for the Red Sox in 2013, he was determined to make an impact on the side.
Iglesias, 23, was brought into the line-up when Will Middlebrooks was optioned to the DL on May 24 - and he hasn't looked back since.
The original expectation for Iglesias from the Red Sox organisation was simply that he would provide the defensive cover needed whilst Middlebrooks recovered. What they got however, was something much more valuable than that.
Iglesias showed Red Sox manager John Farrell that he is highly versatile by covering at both third base and shortstop, although it is at Third Base where he really excels.
Iglesias boasts great reaction times, allowing him to easily react to hard line drives, just as he did last week against Toronto, as he caught a well hit ball off Melky Cabrera in the 2nd inning to provide Red Sox pitcher John Lester with some defensive help.
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of Iglesias's game however, is the offensive prowess he has shown since returning to the big leagues.
Iglesias has been hitting at .417 with 1 Home Run and nine Runs Batted In and held an 18-game hitting streak, which ended on June 19 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
It is exactly this kind of form that is causing a selection nightmare for Farrell, as he battles to give playing time to as many players on the roster as possible.
The issue is, the pairing of Stephen Drew at shortstop and Iglesias at third base has simply been too good to drop, leaving Middlebrooks to be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Farrell knows that the Red Sox have found real potential in Iglesias but it wasn't all that long ago that Middlebrooks was receiving praise and being touted as the next big Red Sox star.
Therefore, Farrell will be hoping that Middlebrooks can regain some confidence in Pawtucket and return stronger and more competitive, because after all, a competitive line-up is what drives players to produce their best every time they take to the field.
