Top 5: Chelsea's best players from the Abramovich Era

Published 4 Comments

We are into the 10th year of Roman Abramovich's ownership of Chelsea, the Russian billionaire is known to fire managers at will but he has also helped in Chelsea's search for silverware.

Many Chelsea legends have grown to prominence under Abramovich's ownership, we look at five of the best.

5. Claude Makelele

Makelele joined Chelsea from Real Madrid where he wasn't treated well.

The French star created a position of his own which people still refer to as the 'Makelele role'.

Today many clubs adopt a system which needs a good central defensive midfielder.

Makelele was one of the main reasons why Chelsea won back-to-back championships under Mourinho.

A tidy passer of the ball, Makelele is also a good tackler. He helped Chelsea win six trophies since he joined them in 2003.

4. Petr Cech

Cech is arguably one of the greatest goalkeepers to grace the Premier League and he has many goalkeeping records to his name and like Makelele has been crucial to Chelsea's recent success.

He was one of the first signings since Roman bought the club and now Cech can be touted as Chelsea's greatest ever keeper.

His heroic performance in the UCL final helped them clinch the Champions League title. Winner of 13 trophies with Chelsea, Cech still has a decade of football left in him and could become one of the greatest keepers.

3. John Terry

Chelsea's captain fantastic, Terry at his peak is one of the best defenders around.

He led Chelsea to many trophies in the Abramovich era and has been one of the most successful captains Chelsea have ever had.

Terry also has a knack for scoring goals, netting 55 in his Chelsea career which is very high for a defender.

Terry captained Chelsea to three Premier League crowns and 14 trophies in total. Terry has also been included in the FIFA World XI five times.

2. Frank Lampard

Chelsea's new all-time top scorer, Lampard rewrote the Chelsea history books in the Abramovich era.

Like Terry, Lampard has also won 14 trophies with Chelsea. Lampard also captains the side occasionally.

Lampard's goalscoring exploits have made him one of the deadliest midfielders in the world and with 203 goals for Chelsea - it is unlikely that anyone will break his record anytime soon.

Lampard scored in the 2008 UCL final which Chelsea lost on penalties to rivals Manchester United.

1. Didier Drogba

He has been the most important player in the Abramovich era.

Chelsea's go-to man for FA Cup finals, Drogba always scored in the FA Cup final.

His goals have been vital for Chelsea in so many ways. Drogba scored in each of Chelsea's four FA Cup triumphs in the Abramovich era and he also won the Golden Boot in 2009/10 helping Chelsea win a third league title under Abramovich's ownership.

Drogba scored a last minute equaliser to keep Chelsea's UCL dream alive and also scored the winning penalty. Drogba has been very important for Chelsea in Abramovich's era.
