Sunderland transfer target Lucas Orban is being chased by Argentinian club River Plate, according to the Shields Gazette.

The Black Cats have spent the bulk of the summer chasing the 22-year-old Tigre left-back, but it is looking increasingly likely that they will miss out on signing the player.

River Plate, who already own 50 per cent of Orban's contract, have publicly stated that they want to buy-out Club Atletico Tigre's remaining stake in the player.

It is understood that Orman's representatives are keen on a move to the Premier League, although the player's family are thought to want to remain in Argentina which could scupper Sunderland's chances.

However, if Orman wants the best chance of forcing his way into the Argentina squad before next summer's World Cup, he may find he has a better chance of that happening playing his football in England's top flight.

Sunderland are expected to sign the highly-rated full-back Benjamin Mendy at some point this week but, aged just 18, he will not be experienced enough to jump straight into Paolo Di Canio's starting line-up.

With no other left-back at the club they may have to consider other alternatives, should they miss out on Orban.

Mendy is due on Wearside this week to discuss personal terms over his switch from French club Le Havre after they accepted an offer for the defender.
