With the new season just over six weeks away, we take a look at how Jose Mourinho’s appointment at Chelsea will affect the young Belgian star Romelu Lukaku.

During Mourinho’s previous time at Chelsea we saw a lot of new players brought into the club, none more noticeable than Didier Drogba, one of the most complete players the Premier League has ever seen.

In his seven years at Stamford Bridge the Ivorian managed to score 100 goals under Jose and his power and pace was the perfect combination to make him one of the top strikers in the world.

Since Didier left Chelsea in favour of a big-money move to Chinese team Shanghai Shenhua, the Blues have simply failed to replace him. This, however, could quite easily change next year with the emergence of 20-year-old Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian joined Chelsea from Anderlecht in 2011 when he was just 18-years-old. Initially, Lukaku’s chances in the first team were very limited and he therefore struggled to show what he could do.

Last season, the Belgian joined West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan deal and it was this spell that got him noticed by English fans all over the country.

Scoring an impressive 17 league goals in 35 games last season, Lukaku soon became a fan favourite at The Hawthorns despite only being a temporary player there.

His form has given Mourinho a dilemma. With Torres starting to look more worth the £50m he once was and Demba Ba enjoying a solid start to his Chelsea career, it will be difficult for the new boss to pick his top striker.

With it looking increasingly likely that Lukaku will stay with Chelsea next year, his resemblance to Drogba may help swing the pendulum his way.

Mourinho has always admired a striker who possesses the power and pace combination we saw with Drogba, and with the Belgian having just that, he is sure to get a chance in the first team next season.

If he can replicate his form at West Brom last year, Lukaku could quite easily become one of Europe’s top strikers during Mourinho’s time at Stamford Bridge and lead Chelsea back to being the best team in the country.
