This year’s Confederations Cup was a truly fantastic tournament. The competition that is traditionally a warm-up for the World Cup has had everything you could ever want from watching football.

As well as the class we are used to from the likes of Andrea Pirlo and Andres Iniesta, a selection of others have used the Confederations Cup to show what they can do.

Here we have a look at some of the best players from the tournament:

Antonio Candreva

The 26-year-old currently plays his football in his home nation of Italy with Lazio.

Candreava is usually used as a central attacking midfielder, however during this tournament Cesare Prandelli has utilised Candreava on the right-wing.

He has consistently shown the desire to join in with attacks as well as the willingness to get back and help his team out with defending.

He has blistering pace which will attract many top sides across Europe. However a move away from Italy looks unlikely as he has spent his whole career playing there.

Paulinho

Paulinho has been a star for Brazil in the Confederations Cup this year.

A real box-to-box midfielder who looks solid defensively in the centre of midfield. At the age of 24, Paulinho is sure to have a great future ahead of him.

Fred

Fred is a name that many European football fans will be familiar with. The now 29-year-old spent four years playing in Ligue 1 with Lyon who at that time were the dominant force in France. In 2009 he left to play in his home nation of Brazil with Fluminense for who he has been in fantastic form.

During this tournament Fred has been spear-heading the Brazilian attack. His involvement has allowed Neymar and Hulk to express their selves, whilst he himself has shown that he knows where the goal is.

Although now 29, Fred could possibly be the perfect player for a team like Arsenal where he could add the finishing touch to their attractive football.

Giovani dos Santos

Giovani Dos Santos is another name that English fans will be familiar with due to the numerous years he spent with Tottenham Hotspur, despite spending the majority of that time on loan elsewhere.

Dos Santos looked a real talent as a young lad at Barcelona yet his career never really seemed to take off. Spurs fans had every right to be excited about seeing the little Mexican in a Tottenham shirt however they were sure to be bitterly disappointed. Making only 15 appearances for the London club, Dos Santos was soon sent on a successive three loan spells before making a permanent move to La Liga with Real Mallorca.

However, he has taken to the Confederations Cup like a fish to water. He has shown all the attributes that made him one of Europe’s most exciting young prospects. And with still only being 24, if he is to continue his fine form a big move may be waiting for him.

John Obi Mikel

Current Chelsea player John Obi Mikel has become somewhat out-of-sought with The Blues is recent times.

Having joined Chelsea rather controversially soon after he had seemingly agreed to become a Manchester United player, the then 19-year-old Nigerian international looked set for big things in the future. However, he never cemented his place in the Chelsea side and is now even being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Despite a rather poor display from Nigeria during this tournament Mikel has shown the quality that initially interested multiple big European teams.

At the age of 26, Mikel could well still have a future at Chelsea. But realistically speaking he may need to look into moving away from London in order to revive his career.
