Gillingham confirm Akinfenwa return
Gillingham re-sign striker Adebayo Akinfenwa following his release from Northampton
Gillingham have confirmed the return of former striker Adebayo Akinfenwa on a free transfer.
The striker, who is renowned for his strength and power, was surprisingly released by Northampton despite finishing the campaign as the club's top goalscorer and becoming a fans' favourite.
He is famed for his stature - his muscular physique makes him appear more like a rugby player than a footballer - and has proved an inspiration, showing that football players do not have to be of a certain size to be successful.
The 31-year-old amassed a total of 17 goals in League Two last term but was not retained, enabling him to re-join the club where he spent the 2010/11 season, on a one-year deal.
This move has a sense of deja vu about it as Akinfenwa ended his first spell with Northampton to join Gillingham, and has now ended his second spell in the same way.
In his previous spell at Priestfield, the much-travelled striker scored 11 times before leaving to join Northampton.
Gillingham boss Martin Allen will be hoping the former Swansea, Doncaster, Milwall and Barry Town man can replicate his form of last season as the club look to consolidate following their promotion from League Two.
