Reports circulated that many of Chelsea’s first-team players are surplus to requirement at Stamford Bridge just after the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Chelsea's new manager.
Among the players who might be shown the exit door are key trio David Luiz, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata.
None of the mentioned names are bit-part players in the club and Luiz - in particular - has been a revelation since his arrival from Benfica.
He has gone from strength to strength and is now a regular for the Brazilian national team.
He is young and still has plenty of time to develop further. He can also provide width to Mourinho’s squad as he is able to play both as a centre-back and as a holding midfielder, becoming an integral part of the club.
No denying the fact that big things were expected of Torres when he joined the Blues from Merseyside for British record fee of £50million.
The first season was indeed a disaster of sorts, but since then he has improved his performances and has altered his gameplay to suit the Blues.
Nobody can deny the fact that he has come up with performances which won Chelsea titles, be it the goal in Barcelona in UEFA Champions League or earning the corner from where Drogba equalised in the final.
Mourinho would be stupid to get rid of Mata. Anyone with a sane mindset would be foolish to let go of their best player for the last two years.
He has been pivotal in Chelsea’s success and his performances speak for itself.
Only time will tell whether their future will be at the club. We’ll know once they rejoin the squad early next month.
