Manchester United have confirmed Ryan Giggs has been named as player-coach with immediate effect.

The 39-year-old is the club's record appearance maker, and has been tipped as a future United manager.

He's currently taking his coaching badges, and should earn his UEFA pro licence next year. The midfielder signed a new one-year contract extension in March, and will combine playing duties with a coaching role under new boss David Moyes.

"It's no secret that I have been taking my qualifications and I see this as the first step in my future career," Giggs said. "I'm really looking forward to working alongside David Moyes and the team."

And Moyes, who took over officially from Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this month, revealed he hopes to benefit from the experience offered by the most decorated player in the club's history.

"I'm delighted that Ryan has accepted the chance to become player-coach," said Moyes. "His success and ability to adapt his game over a number of years gives him unrivalled perspective on the modern game.

"His career is an example to any aspiring young player and I'm sure that both he and the players will benefit from his new role."

Giggs is the latest name appointed by Moyes to his back room staff. The former-Everton boss has brought over some of his team from Goodison Park - including assistant manager Steve Round and Chris Woods and Jimmy Lumsden.

Former-Manchester United favourite Phil Neville has also been confirmed as another appointment - the ex-Everton full-back worked with Moyes on Merseyside.
