Arsenal were linked with a sensational swoop for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez last night after bookmakers stopped taking bets on the move.
According to the Sun, a series of massive bets on the Anfield star moving from Liverpool to the Gunners caused the bookies to halt taking bets.
Suarez’s comments while away with Uruguay this summer have all but confirmed he is trying to engineer a move away from Merseyside, despite manager Brendan Rodgers’ optimism he would stay.
Even then, Real Madrid were reportedly the club that were after him and Arsenal certainly weren’t one of the teams widely credited with an interest.
William Hill were the bookmaker forced to close the market following the sizeable wagers.
“It would suggest they have heard something substantial,” the Sun quotes spokesperson Rupert Adams as saying.
Suarez moving to Arsenal would cause quite a stir among both sets of fans, though the Liverpool faithful are likely to react more vociferously.
The 26-year-old had stated the treatment of him by the British press as one of the main reasons behind him considering a transfer, so leaving for a rival Premier League club probably wouldn’t go down too well.
