Arouna Koné looked set to rejoin former manager Roberto Martinez at Everton this summer, but Newcastle United could scupper the deal.

This news comes following reports in the Independent that a £5m bid from the Tyneside outfit has been accepted.

Koné was widely expected to join Martinez at Everton before the close of the window. Although it is still understood that Goodison Park is his preferred destination, representatives of the Ivory Coast international are set to meet with Newcastle United in the coming days.

Koné joined Wigan Athletic after sealing a £2m move from Levante last summer. In his debut Premier League season, the striker racked up 11 league goals in 34 games. It was during this time that the 29-year-old picked up FA Cup silverware with Wigan, defeating Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

His agent has gone on record as saying that the international has no desire to play in the Championship, and it is increasingly apparent that the star wishes to return to the Premier League.

Whilst Newcastle have plans to scupper the deal, Everton still lead the way in the chase for the adaptable frontman.
