England have confirmed their 13-man squad for the first Ashes test match against Australia, which has no room for Nick Compton.

The Somerset star had been left out of England's Ashes warm-up fixture against Essex, with selectors preferring to chance Joe Root as captain Alastair Cook opening batting partner.

Despite failing to make any serious runs in his two innings against Essex, Root has a formidable first-class record as opener from his county side, Yorkshire.

Root's inspiring form at the start of the county championship forced his position only into England's middle order, but with Compton failing to add to the two hundred's he scored in New Zealand earlier in the year, Root has been promoted to his preferred position.

The 22-year-old averages 45.66 in first-class matches, which was aided by a extraordinary  career best 236 earlier in the season.

After failing to make runs in the home test match series against New Zealand, Compton was dropped from the England set-up and sent back to county cricket in order to refind his touch.

The South African-born batsmen has since gone onto score 501 runs in his 10 innings since the start of June.

In a bid to force his way back into the selectors thoughts, the 30-year old took part in both Australia's Ashes warm-up fixtures; playing for both Somerset and Worcestershire.

Compton continued his impressive resurgence in form and went on to average 55 against the Aussies.

However, despite re-finding his touch the England selectors have kept the faith with their decision, with the 22-year-old very much in eyes of England's long-term success.

National selector Geoff Miller said: "This is an incredibly exciting period of cricket coming up against Australia and we know we will need to play to our full potential throughout the entire Investec Ashes series if we are to retain the Ashes."

The selectors have also opted to add an extra bowler to the squad, with Steven Finn, Graham Onions and Tim Bresnan left to battle it out to bowl alongside Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann and James Anderson.

Full England Squad: Alastair Cook (Capt), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Ian Bell, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Steven Finn, Graham Onions, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Joe Root, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott.
