Jozy Altidore has confirmed that his current club AZ Alkmaar have agreed a deal with Sunderland that will see him move to the Stadium of Light.
The USA international has been linked with the Black Cats for some time now and, although earlier this week he appeared uninterested in gossip concerning the move, it seems as though he will be plying his trade in England as of next season.
Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio, who saw a bid for Altidore rejected earlier in the week, is attempting to bolster his attacking options after his team’s poor showing in the league last year.
Fans of the Premier League may remember 23-year-old Altidore from his time at Hull City, where he played whilst on loan during the 2009/10 season. During that spell he only managed one goal in 28 outings, but has since matured his game.
It is believed that Altidore announced the news of his imminent transfer on a personal website, but the declaration was soon removed before any concrete clarification could be had.
Sky Sports report that it’s now expected Altidore will undergo a medical in Sunderland on Monday and, barring any unforeseen issues, will then complete his switch for an fee thought to be around the £5m mark.
The news is certain to be welcomed by Sunderland fans as Altidore was a prolific goalscorer last year - albeit in the Dutch Eredivisie. He managed a total of 23 goals in AZ’s most recent campaign and is tipped in some quarters as being one to watch for the future.
