Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has suggested that the current England squad can challenge for the World Cup in Brazil next year.

The England national team have always struggled for form on the big platforms, with their last piece of silverware coming in 1966. But Rooney is confident that England can challenge the likes of Spain and Brazil and come away from Rio De Janiero with the World Cup trophy.

Rooney has enjoyed success at club level ever since his move from Everton to Old Trafford in the summer of 2004. His debut at United wielded a hat-trick and an assist in a 6-2 Champions League victory over Turkish outfit Fenerbahce, and Rooney hasn't looked back whilst playing in a Manchester United shirt.

Rooney has won the Champions League, five Premier League titles, two league titles and scored 198 goals during his time at Old Trafford, but international success has thus far eluded the 27-year-old.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Rooney feels that a career without national silverware would be a huge disappointment.

"Playing for my country is obviously something that I'm very proud about.

"But if I finish my England career without winning anything then it won't be the success it could be be.

"You can have as many caps or goals as you want but it's all about trophies if I'm going to look back on my time in an England shirt as a success," Rooney said.

But the Manchester United striker emphasised that he still has time to help England achieve success on a major platform, with the current squad stronger than ever.

"There's a few more years to go in which we can do just that. And I think that is achievable with this current England squad under Roy Hodgson.

"World Cups and European Championships are tough to play in, with some great teams.

"But we've got more youngsters coming through now than ever before in my time with the squad.

"It should give us the belief and energy we need to win a tournament," added Rooney.
