Chelsea are preparing to make a bid for Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, according to

The Belgian, who scored 23 goals in 39 appearances last season after signing for the Villains from Genk, is seen as the powerful striker that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wants to lead the line of attack next season.

The 22-year-old’s club are unlikely to sell him cheaply, with three years left on his current contract and having signed him for £7 million in the summer of 2012.

But the lure of Champions League football could attract the forward to Stamford Bridge, with Paul Lambert’s team likely to be battling in the bottom half of the Premier League in the upcoming campaign.

The Blues seem likely to miss out on other transfer targets, such as Edinson Cavani and Robert Lewandowski, who are closer to joining Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich respectively, meaning they could turn to players who are not currently playing in Europe’s premier competition.

It has previously been reported that Tottenham and Liverpool are also following Benteke’s situation with interest.
