Jose Mourinho believes Chelsea were unknown to the rest of world football before he joined first-time around back in 2004.

The Portuguese man took over from Claudio Ranieri back in 2004 after leaving Portuguese side FC Porto - a club which he guided to Champions League glory.

After joining Stamford Bridge, Mourinho guided Chelsea to numerous trophies and according to him, he put the club on the map.

Now that Mourinho has returned to English football with Chelsea, he is ready to take them to the next level as he eyes a massive global fanbase and wants to take the club to the heights of Europe's elite.

Mourinho pinpointed that since 2004, Chelsea have won 11 trophies compared to Manchester United's nine.

Chelsea have a pre-season tour to Asia coming up this week and there is expected to be a mass crowd of fans gathered to welcome the players, something that didn't happen when Chelsea flew to the States back when Mourinho first took over.

"The first time I went to the States, in 2004 with Chelsea for pre-season, the training session was open-door and there were 10 kids," said Mourinho.

"Nobody cared when we walked in the street. Maybe somebody said, ‘Oh, Frank Lampard’, but no more than that.

"After two years with the boom of the economic impact of the owner, buying the players, winning the Premier League and reaching the Champions League semi-finals, things changed.

"We went to the States again and had an open training session. This time, there were three or four thousand watching in Los Angeles.

"Chelsea have a different history to clubs like Barcelona, Real and Bayern. This club had a history before Mr Abramovich arrived and has a history after 2004.

"But the reality of that recent history of nearly 10 years is that Chelsea have won more trophies than Manchester United.

"I hope I can now help the club to take another step in the right direction."
