Manchester United transfer target Kevin Strootman is being lined up by Serie A side Roma, reports the Daily Star.

The Red Devils have been looking to add a dynamic midfielder to their squad following the release of veteran playmaker Paul Scholes earlier this summer. David Moyes has picked up Sir Alex Ferguson's interest in the PSV midfielder, after United failed in a bid to bring the 23-year-old to Old Trafford in January.

PSV have stated this week that they want to keep Strootman at the club for a further year, despite United's interest in their player. Sporting director of football Marcel Brands stated that they want to regain Strootman's services for another season, and would then be willing to let him leave. But it now seems that Rudi Garcia's Roma have joined the race to sign Strootman from the Eredivisie side.

Italian newspaper II Tempo have suggested that Roma are attempting to bring PSV's £12m valuation down to a smaller fee, that would entice them into making an offer. But it is understood that David Moyes' United would be able to stump up the £12m right away, whereas the Serie A outfit don't have the same financial capabilities.

But Roma boss Garcia has identified Strootman as the man to build on last seasons 6th place Serie A finish. Garcia is also reportedly interested in signing United winger Luis Nani, who said this week that "nothing is certain" regarding his future.
