Following Gennady Golovkin's crushing victory over Mathew Macklin, there are calls for Golovkin to fight Sergio Martinez.
Golovkin's performance against Macklin showed just why people are raving about him. He dominated Macklin and ended the bout with a horrifically painful body shot that had Macklin riving with pain.
As soon as Golovkin landed the punch it was obvious that the fight was over. Macklin is a tough man so to be destroyed so early on is symbolic of the unbelievable punch power that Golovkin posses.
Golovkin has the highest knock-out percentage of any middleweight champion and of any current champion. His power is unparalleled for a man of his size and it is actually frightening to watch at times.
He is technically very good and when you combine that with such lethal power he is really becoming a true star of the sport. A fight with Sergio Martinez seems the next logical step for Golovkin.
It is unknown if Martinez would want this fight after being lucky to come through recent fights such as with Martin Murray in which many felt that Martinez actually lost the fight. If this fight could be pulled off then it would be a huge fight in which the true king of the middleweight division would be decided.
I would expect Golovkin to come through this fight over the much older Martinez. If Martinez is not the next opponent for Golovkin then Brit Martin Murray could be. Murray is a top level middleweight who many believe is seriously unlucky not to have been given the win against both Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez in his previous title fights. This would also be an intriguing match-up but one that I would back Golovkin to win.
Following what I predict to be a successful next fight at middleweight, a possibility for Golovkin is moving up in weight. It has been stated that Golovkin is willing to fight anyone from light-middleweight to super-middleweight in order to prove that he is a superstar of the sport.
If Golovkin truly is open to fight at these three weight divisions then mouth-watering match-ups could be in line. Opponents such as Carl Froch and Andre Ward wait at Super middleweight.
A fight with Froch would be a scintillating one with two real tough-guys going head to head. Golovkin's power up against Froch's determination and granite chin would make for excellent viewing. I don't however, expect this fight to take place if I'm being honest.
At light-middleweight opponents such as Floyd Mayweather, Saul Alvarez and Miguel Cotto await Golovkin. These would be sensational fights for the public. Golovkin may however, be an avoided boxer in the future as he proves to be a real threat to anyone.
Golovkin has shown that he is an elite level fighter with his demolition job on Mathew Macklin. Golovkin can go on from this to be a pound for pound star.
