Afternoon Football Report: July 8

Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti has brushed off speculation linking him with a summer move to Arsenal.

Reports in Italy have claimed that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has made an enquiry for Marchetti, who has recently been on Confederations Cup duty with the Azzurri.

Vitesse Arnhem have announced the re-signing of Chelsea defender Patrick van Aanholt on a season-long loan.

The Dutch left-back has agreed his third spell with the Eredivisie club, having also spent time in his homeland in the previous two seasons.

Roberto Mancini believes former club Manchester City are growing but still have some way to go to match the best clubs in Europe.

City have enjoyed great domestic success over the past few years, winning the FA Cup in 2011 and the Premier League 12 months later, but Mancini lost his job as manager when they ended last season without a major trophy.

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway has told talkSPORT that he will not attempt to re-sign Wilfried Zaha on loan, and has backed the England youngster to walk straight into the Manchester United first-team.

Zaha joined the Old Trafford club in January, but was loaned back to the Eagles to help them win promotion to the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur target Jese Rodriguez admits he is not certain to stay at Real Madrid, due to a lack of first-team chances.

The Spanish winger was one of the stars of this summer's Under-20 World Cup, and impressed last season with 22 goals in Real's B team.

And finally, Lionel Messi will resume Barcelona training on July 15 after enjoying just one week of holiday following a summer filled with various commitments.

The Argentine has been taking part in a series of charity games across the world, which came to an end in Chicago this weekend.
