Sunderland have reached a deal to sign Jozy Altidore, according to AZ Alkamaar's official website.

The United States international would be returning to the Premier League for the second time after having spent on a season-long spell at Hull City in 2009-10.

The 23-year old is expected to have a medical on Monday and will sign a long-term contract with the Black Cats.

Altidore moved to Villareal from New York Red Bulls in 2008 but spent most of his time on loan at the likes of Hull, Xerez and Bursapor.

The striker moved to Dutch outfit Alkamaar two years ago and has been a success story for them, having made 67 appearances and netting 38 goals.

He made his senior debut for the United States in 2007. He has 60 international caps and has scored 17 goals so far.

Altidore would be the seventh summer signing made by Paulo Di Canio as they have already confirmed the signing of Valentin Roberge, Duncan Watmore, Mobido Diakite, Cabral, David Moberg Karlsson and goalkeeper Vito Mannone.
