Manchester United: Three players to solve midfield crisis

Published 1 Comments

Manchester United may have won the Premier League title with ease last season, but their midfield still drew much criticism and struggled to keep possession on occasions.

The only shining light in the United midfield was Michael Carrick who, without a doubt, had his best season for the club.

With United legend Paul Scholes calling time on his playing career for a second, and what he says will be the final time, the Red Devils find themselves short in the midfield, with Darren Fletcher still out with illness, new arrival Shinji Kagawa having a patchy first season in the Premier League and both Tom Cleverley and Anderson failing to claim a regular spot in the starting XI.

David Moyes may well be thinking of bringing in a few new faces in the midfield and here are some possible candidates.

1. Kevin Strootman | PSV

PSV captain Kevin Strootman would appear to be a perfect addition to the United squad, with his incredible stamina he is a great box-to-box midfielder who can defend brilliantly but can also pick out a killer pass in the final third of the pitch.

The addition of Strootman would offer players like Carrick and Kagawa the opportunity to play with more freedom and would also offer a element of leadership in the middle of the park, with the club failing to replace fan favourite Roy Keane who was vocal and defended with all his might, a good old fashioned midfielder.

2. Thigao Alcantara | Barcelona

Thiago Alcantara has impressed many fans with his standout performances whilst captaining Spain in the European U21 Championship and he has reportedly told Barcelona he wants to leave the club for regular first-team football, which would be a huge loss for the Catalans.

Thiago is a player who shows plenty of promise at the age of only 22; with his remarkable arsenal of passes he stands out even playing next to Andres Iniesta and Xavi at times.

It has been reported that the young playmaker has a buyout clause of £18m and Manchester United look set to activate it. Many journalists in the UK claim Barcelona are holding last ditch talks with the Spaniard to persuade him to stay with the club but it would seem Manchester United looks a likely destination for Thiago.

3. Christian Eriksen | Ajax

Christian Eriksen has been on the radar of many Premier League clubs during the last two years whilst impressing for Ajax in the Eredivisie and also in the Champions league, helping Ajax knock out Manchester City in the group stages of the competition last year.

Eriksen has a broad range of passes, can dribble very well and can use the ball well under pressure - all vital attributes for any midfielder which would make him more than capable to help Manchester United's misery in midfield.
