Chelsea sign Mark Schwarzer

.

Chelsea have completed the signing of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer after the veteran Australian was released by west London rivals Fulham at the end of last season.

The 40-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the Blues and arrives at Stamford Bridge as an experienced deputy to current No.1 gloveman Petr Cech.

"It's a phenomenal club," Schwarzer told the official Chelsea website.

"It's one of the biggest and best clubs in the world, and it's an honour to sign for Chelsea. I didn't take much convincing to come here."

The former Middlesbrough shot-stopper made 218 appearances for Fulham during five seasons at Craven Cottage, before he was allowed to leave following the capture of Netherlands international Maarten Stekelenburg.

Schwarzer is the third signing since the arrival of Jose Mourinho as the club's new manager, with Andre Schurrle and Marco van Ginkel also having completed transfers to Chelsea in recent weeks.

Chelsea fans will, however, be hopeful the club can complete the acquisition of a marquee player before the close of the transfer window, having been linked with the likes of Edinson Cavani and Robert Lewandowski.

The Blues, however, appear set to lose out on Lewandowski after Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp claimed the Polish striker has agreed to join Bayern Munich on a free transfer next summer.
