Thiago Alcantara has been urged by Vicente del Bosque to stay with Barcelona beyond the summer transfer window, amid intense speculation the young Spaniard could join Manchester United.

The Barcelona midfielder has been linked with a transfer to the Premier League champions following the appointment of David Moyes as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Moyes is reported to have identified Thiago as a potentially key acquisition following the retirement of Paul Scholes and, it has been claimed, the 22-year-old has already agreed terms in a five-year deal with Manchester United.

Barcelona may be loath to allow the youngster to leave Camp Nou, but may be unable to prevent a transfer were Manchester United able to activate the €18 million release clause written into his current contract.

Del Bosque, though, has pleaded with Thiago to resist the overtures of Manchester United and instead focus on breaking through at Barcelona rather than jump ship in the early days of his career.

"The most important thing for Thiago is that he keeps getting games," the Spain manager said, as reported by Metro.

"There are other options, but I think he will get them at Barcelona, he is held in a very high regard at the club."
