Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly fallen behind in their respective transfer pursuits of Kurt Zouma after Wolfsburg lodged a bid for the highly-rated Saint-Etienne defender.
According to SportsDirect News, the German club have made the first move for Zouma, and Chelsea and Manchester United are now considering their respective next steps.
The Premier League rivals are both reported to be contemplating following the lead of Wolfsburg by making a formal offer for the 18-year-old Frenchman, as David Moyes and Jose Mourinho look to reinforce their recently inherited squads.
Chelsea have been credited with interest in Zouma for the past 12 months, which is reported to have intensified following the teenage centre-back's breakthrough season in Ligue 1 last term.
The initial hesitance of Chelsea to make an approach for the player last year, however, has seen Manchester United emerge as contenders to claim his signature, with Moyes hopeful of bolstering his Old Trafford defence.
Zouma made 18 appearances in the league for Les Verts last term, as the club clinched fifth position - an improvement of two places on their standing during the previous campaign.
Saint-Etienne also won the Coupe de la Ligue, which affords them the opportunity to qualify for the Europa League next season.
