Manchester United manager David Moyes claims Wayne Rooney is in the best shape he has ever been at Manchester United.
The Old Trafford squad returned for pre-season training last week and the former Everton manager revealed coaching staff at the Carrington training centre had been impressed with his fitness levels.
Manchester United fly out to Bangkok on Wednesday to begin their pre-season tour of the Far Ear and Australia, and Moyes is hoping to have the 27-year-old striker in supreme shape for the start of the season.
“He’s trained great. They [people at the club] are telling me they’ve never seen him in better shape,” he said in an interview with talkSPORT.
“That’s positive. He’s not for sale and I will try to get the best Wayne Rooney I possibly can.”
Rooney’s future has been under intense speculation this summer after Sir Alex Ferguson suggested at the end of last season that the England international had asked for a transfer.
Arsenal and Chelsea have been credited with an interest in signing him, but Moyes last week insisted Manchester United had no interest in selling.
The Scot reiterated that stance in this latest interview and claimed the relationship between him and Rooney was as good as it has ever been.
“The club have said that Wayne is staying, and he’s not for sale,” he added.
“I’ve met him on several occasions recently. Wayne has been to my house, I’ve been to his and obviously we’re here [at the training ground] every day.
“A lot has been said about me and Wayne over recent years but we have a good relationship.”
