AC Milan have lost their identity

The true spirit of AC Milan has been fading in the last couple of years.

For an Italian team, AC Milan seem to rely less and less on their greatest virtue: players who have a genuine passion for the club.

The love that Paolo Maldini bears for Milan is no secret. The fact they seem to forget is the five Champions League trophies the one-club man lifted.

The greatest feats completed by the Rossoneri were delivered by footballers who fully understood a higher level of commitment to their team’s ambitions.

As mentioned before, Maldini accompanied by Andrea Pirlo, Genaro Gattuso, Filippo Inzaghi, Franco Baresi, Mauro Tassotti and Alessandro Costacurta formed a squad capable of communicating in an harmony never again attained.

Nowadays the club is confused, identity wise. Italian football is strict and sometimes overwhelming for players with difficulties in tactical understanding. Every player seen as a foreigner to his club’s manners is walking on thin ice from the very beginning.

Italians are accustomed to winning in memorable fashion. This is the main aspect that makes Francesco Totti an idol equal to the founders of Rome itself, the great tenacity and spirit which make him faithful to only one club.

But one is never good enough, and Roma, Inter Milan and AC Milan are stricken.

The project is one of time and patience, searching for footballers who are able to perceive more than just salary and contracts, and lecturing youth to teach them how important it is to be forever welcome in the San Siro.

This next season could once again be a disappointment.
