Five of the best: SPL pre-season friendlies
A look at five of the most exciting pre-season friendlies involving SPL sides this summer
SPL sides may be trying to save every penny during these recent tough economic times. That, however, doesn't mean that there are no interesting pre-season friendlies to be enjoyed.
Unlike teams south of the border, there will be no jetting off to the States or Asia, or any other exotic locations. But here in bonnie Scotland there are these five games (amongst others) to look out for!
Ross County v Manchester United XI
Ross County have set up a very exciting tie with a Manchester United XI on July 20 at their home ground.
With United's first-team in Asia at the time, the side travelling to the Highlands looks set to be made up of youth and reserve players, as well as those coming back from injury, but many familiar faces should still be expected.
Aberdeen v FC Twente
The Dons' final pre-season match will see them host Dutch side FC Twente.
The Dutchmen finished sixth last season in the Eredivisie, but have enjoyed their fair share of European football in recent years.
Aberdeen should expect a tough match when their visitors take to the Pittodrie field on August 3 and will hope the opposition provide the perfect warm-up before kicking off their league campaign a week later.
Liverpool v Celtic
The Aviva Stadium will be hosting its inaugural 'Dublin Decider' on August 10, with Celtic and Liverpool meeting each other.
This will not be Celtic's first visit to the three-year-old Aviva Stadium, having played in the Dublin Super Cup in 2011.
The two clubs have a strong Irish association and significant followings in the capital, making this one of Dublin's hottest tickets this summer as both clubs commit to fielding first team squads.
Wigan v Dundee United
Dundee United will be the first visitors to the DW Stadium in Owen Coyle's time in charge of Wigan Athletic.
The FA Cup winners will be preparing for life in the Championship, but still boast a strong squad that will fully test the Arabs.
These two sides also met in the pre-season of 2010, with Wigan winning 3-1 on that occasion.
Motherwell v Newcastle United
In preparation for their European qualifiers, Motherwell will be hosting Premier League side Newcastle United on July 16.
The Magpies will travel to Fir Park to play the side which finished second to Celtic in last year's SPL.
Alan Pardew's men will also play SPL side Saint Mirren on July 30.
