The Toronto Maple Leafs have been one of the more active teams throughout these first few days of free agency period.
And GM Dave Nonis has already proven that he is capable of making tough, surprising decisions. Most notably, the decision to buy out Mikhail Grabovski was very surprising. Grabovski had four years left on his contract, and looked to be ready to continue helping the Leafs reach new heights. Instead the Leafs part ways with the centerman and absorb a cost of $21.5m.
The Komisarek buyout was a pretty simple decision. Losing Clarke Macarthur was also a bit of a surprise.
The additions to the Leaf’s roster include Stanley Cup winner Dave Bolland and David Clarkson. Also, the Leaf’s have resigned Tyler Bozak as well. I believe all these players will give Randy Carlyle good depth to work with within his roster.
Although the latest signing of forward Clarkson is exciting, I find his price tag to be a little high. Regardless, both Bolland and Clarkson will certainly help the Leafs next season. Both these players have great speed, size and aren’t afraid to throw down their gloves when required.
That being said, I believe the Leafs penalty minutes will see a dramatic increase this upcoming season. I believe the resigning of Tyler Bozak was extremely vital to the Leafs success this upcoming year.
This kid will only continue to improve his game with this organization. Bozak does all the little things right, and is also becoming a dominant force in the faceoff circle as well.
I believe the Leafs are well on their way to making another push for the playoffs and beyond this season. If their star players like Lupul and Kessel can stay healthy, I believe the Leafs have the potential to finish as high as fourth in the Eastern Conference this year.
I don’t know what kind of deals Mike Nonis may be preparing next. But so far, I’d say that he’s putting together a pretty decent team.
