Real Madrid’s decision to name Carlo Ancelotti as the successor to Jose Mourinho came, to many, as an expected move by the Spanish side.

Ancelotti is regarded as one of the greatest managers of his time and therefore the match between himself and a club with the stature of Madrid looks to be a match made in heaven.

With the last three teams he has coached: AC Milan, Chelsea and PSG, he managed to win the league title and several cup competitions including a Champions League for AC Milan.

He was regarded as unlucky to be sacked by Chelsea as many of the fans thought his style of football and the way he managed his players suited the club's ambitions, but after a trophy-less season the owner Roman Abramovich deemed this fact unacceptable and removed him from his position.

After his adventures in England he began to undertake the project at PSG, which was a club with a sudden influx of money demanding success in a relatively short amount of time.

In his first season he finished runners-up by three points, but managed to gain the club Champions League qualification. This last season in charge of PSG, he managed to win the league by a margin of 12 points which is a considerable gap.

This coupled with reaching the Champions League quarter-finals and losing to the great Barcelona on the away goals rule. This French adventure shows that Ancelotti still oozes class and is one of the many reasons why Real Madrid have appointed him as manager.

At Chelsea he broke the record for the amount of goals scored in the league in one season, with Chelsea scoring 103 goals. This shows his ability to bring out the best of his attacking players to be able to score goals for will.

In addition to this, he is able to impose a calming effect on all his players to player their natural game and the ability to implement a steal in the team to make them tough to breakdown. This last factor in terms of implementing steal into a team could be a major factor in the Spanish giants making him their number one choice.

Real Madrid have always been able to score goals but it’s their defensive record which is of concern and will be one of the first areas Ancelotti will try and improve.

Overall the appointment on paper looks to be an impressive combination of a club with stature and a manager that is world class.

His ability to bring top quality players to a club, as seen with the transfers of Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to PSG shows that he can spend money well. Could he want to bring over a player of Silva’s calibre to sure up the Madrid defence? It’s a possibility.

Time will tell how successful Ancelotti will be but I feel that he will bring success to the Madrid club and should win at least two pieces of silverware in the next couple of seasons.
