Chelsea are ready to take on Paris Saint-Germain for the signing of Brazil international midfielder Hernanes.
According to Italian newspaper Il Tempo, the Stamford Bridge club have made tentative enquiries to Lazio regarding the playmaker this week.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has reportedly agreed to back new manager Jose Mourinho in the transfer market this summer, with a sum of £100million mooted in places.
This commitment could be tested with Hernanes as PSG have also been credited with an interest – something that was confirmed publicly by new boss Laurent Blanc.
“A negotiation for Hernanes is inviting,” he was quoted as saying earlier in the week.
“But I do not want to say too much, or say that anything is close. We have other priorities at the moment including a defender and a striker.”
The report in Il Tempo claims Mourinho is keen to add midfielders to his squad, which could be connected to John Obi Mikel being linked with a move to Turkey and Oriol Romeu reportedly on the verge of a loan switch to Valencia.
However, it also claims PSG are serious about recruiting the 28-year-old and will raise the bidding to fight off interest in west London.
Hernanes is a skillful, versatile central midfielder; he can play the deeper lying role in front of the back four or more advanced, as he has a knack for scoring spectacular goals.
Were he to make the switch to Chelsea, Hernanes would join fellow Brazilians David Luiz, Ramires, Oscar and Lucas Piazon.
